Book Review- The McKinsey Mind

Updated: Feb 27, 2022

I started reading this book to understand the world of Management Consultancy in a bit more detail. Guess what I found- This book is more than just that! I hoped to find how consultancies really work, how to fetch data about companies from various sources to help my investment part of story, but this book ended with me learning much more-

  1. Hypothesis building and problem solving- The book started with explaining how a problem at hand of consultants is taken up and how one can structure his whole proposed solution. The process of choosing a couple of hypotheses to base the analysis on, and the disciple required to sway away from one when it proves incorrect are lessons that will help me with the problem solving process in personal, professional, as well as financial spheres.

  2. Team management- The book was studded with McKinsey alumni interviews, providing first hand experience of several top-notch white collar managers. They share their experience on how to build a team from scratch, how to motivate and incentivize them, and how to balance your own work-life balance is an excellent lesson to learn.

  3. Power of Paraphrasing- Very very interesting concept that I was introduced to through this book, and which helps me not just understand this new field of consultancy, but also my help me with my teaching career. This tell us how expressing the meaning of using different words can convey it to an audience more strongly.

At the end, I will call this a good read for two sets of people- people who want to get into Consultancies, and also to managers leading any team anywhere in the world.
