Deciphering Land Measurements: Making Sense of Square Feet, Gaj, and Acres

I never really had to buy or sell land until now, so units like “gaj” and “acre” didn’t mean much to me in practical terms—especially when trying to picture what they looked like. However, with guesstimate practice on the rise, I figured it was finally time to dive in and get a better understanding. So, here’s a basic visualization I created to compare the three units: square feet (sq ft), gaj, and acres.



To help put these units into perspective, here are a few familiar benchmarks:

  • 1 Cricket Field ≈ 3.8 acres

  • 1 Football Field ≈ 1.3 acres
